riGEEKulous

ridiculously, awesomely geeky.

About this Amplog

"Rigeekulous - Ridiculously, awesomely geeky" is a Clog of everything we read that fits that description. Example:
"Check it out, I just completed a lifesize model of megaman out of legos."

"Wow. That's rigeekulous."

Thought you saw the last of Windows 95? Think again!

This is insane!  Windows 95 on an iPhone!  I think I’m literally speechless…

Give a guy an iPhone, a jailbreak, and an open-source, cross-platform x86 emulator, and it’s just a matter of time before hilarity ensues. In this case, said hilarity involves getting Windows 95 to boot on an iPhone 3G, a process that takes 5-10 minutes worth of pure boot time only to yield an environment useless for… well, actual use.Read more at www.engadget.com

It’s log, It’s log, it’s big it’s heavy, it holds your iPhone?

I love juxtapositions, and this mix of the height of high-tech with carpentry craftsmanship is just too much fun. It’s a little pricey, but really adorable.

My affinity for wood gadget accessories has come to this: an iPhone dock that looks like a log.

Though it’s not as sleek as most iPhone docks usually are, I think it’s kinda hot. The log dock ($68) is pretty organic, and not just in looks - made from real cedar, it must smell pretty lovely - but watch out for splinters!Read more at www.geeksugar.com

For a little bit of retro-future irony, you can get this $0.99 iPhone app that makes your phone look like the the fictional device that predicted it’s arrival… Except for the fact that your phone is actually a computer, tricoder, and communicator all in one.

Augmented Reality - Coming to our phones!

With magnetometers (essentailly a digital compass), cameras, and GPS built into the new iPhone and Android phones, we’ve got all the tools we need to do true augmented reality applications.

To give you a hint of why that’s awesome, imagine pointing your phone at the night sky - it knows which direction it’s pointing and what angle it’s at, and shows you the same picture of the sky you’re looking at, overlaid with information about the constellations. That app already exists for Android phones!

Not convinced yet? Imagine pointing your phone at your friend, yelling “bang” and watch as the virtual bullet flies towards them on the screen, while they watch it on theirs and try to dodge.

I’ll be very surprised if we don’t see some astounding augmented reality applications come out for the iPhone 3GS. With it’s beefier processor, better camera, and video-tuned graphics chip as well as the magnetometer, it’s the perfect device for it!

Very cool iPhone to Lego NXT robot integration.

When I first read the title I assumed they came up with some crazy interface to talk to the NXT system using bluetooth over an iPhone but sometimes the most simple solutions are the most genius!

Amplifyd from blog.makezine.com
This is a demonstration of iPhone to Lego NXT Robot communication via the Safari browser and Lego’s Light Sensor. To build this, you’ll need a laptop, two iPhones, and a Lego NXT Robotics Kit. First, build your robot. Second write some Java LeJOS Robot code. Third write some Google Web Toolkit web application code. Fourth, plug in your iPhone into the robot, and use either a browser or another iPhone to drive the Lego Robot!

New Gmail App for iPhone and Android

Sounds like a huge improvement, especially the local caching abilities.

Amplifyd from www.engadget.com
If you’ve been losing sleep in eager anticipation of the new Gmail for mobile, rest assured that you’ll sleep soundly tonight. With support for both Android phones and iPhone / iPod Touch OS 2.2.1, the gang over at the Google mobile blog are justifiably proud of the new app. Expect nothing less than a more robust cache that utilizes Gears to allow you to compose messages and access recently read messages without a network connection, an improved look and feel, and the all new “floaty bar” (their name, not ours) that keeps popular menu commands from scrolling off screen, as this bad boy rolls out progressively over the course of the day. And for those of you who are resistant to change, fear not — the previous version is still available. Check it out for yourself over at gmail.com, but not before peeping that super-sweet video after the break.

Honestly Steve, all I can say is.. FINALLY

I am so sick of not being able to receive texted images, I can’t even tell you. My old Sprint phone from 2003 had this functionality! Hooray that the iPhone is finally catching up!

Apple previews iPhone OS 3.0, featuring cut, copy and paste
cutcopypaste_iphone.png

Search: Last year Apple added search for contacts, and now there will be the ability to search your email, calendars, iTunes, and notes. Also added will be Spotlight, letting you search across the iPhone for a keyword.

MMS: the widely adopted Multimedia Messaging System will now work on the iPhone, letting you attach photos to text messages for instant, you-are-there fun. You can also forward and delete messages.

Landscape typing in Apple Apps: Now you can turn your iPhone on its side and type with a larger touchscreen keyboards, a feature that was available in some situations but not in email. Finally.

What’s Missing: Still no support for Flash video and applications in Safari. No tethering, the ability to use the iPhone’s 3G connection to get online with your laptop. Even though Apple says it’s “supporting tethering on the client side,” its providers aren’t playing ball just yet. No video recording.

Multiplayer connectivity: The iPhone will automagically discover other iPhones running the same app, and you can play games with them. Welcome to the social.

Video Conferencing on the iPhone?

Amplifyd from www.crunchgear.com
Apple was recently granted a gigantic patent covering everything that is the iPhone and a closer look reveals that serious video capabilities might be coming in the next iPhone.
The company just wants to protect its assets by including everything the iPhone could be within the legal bounds of the patent. Still, an iPhone with a video conferencing mode is definitely something within the realm of possibilities - hopefully.

Whoa…thats nuts. Says these references were made in the patent filing along with these neat little illustrations.
