riGEEKulous

ridiculously, awesomely geeky.

About this Amplog

"Rigeekulous - Ridiculously, awesomely geeky" is a Clog of everything we read that fits that description. Example:
"Check it out, I just completed a lifesize model of megaman out of legos."

"Wow. That's rigeekulous."

DIY Tauntaun Costume

If I had one of these, commuting in the snow this winter would be much more interesting.

Crafty Star Wars fan Scott Holden blogs about this amazing costume and how he made it. After designing his costume on the computer in Solidworks, he went straight to work.

Then came more foam, plaster, clay, silicone, plastic, PVC, a back pack, drywall stilts, snowboard bindings, felt, craft fur, steel concrete stakes, paint, and a saddle!

Skateboards + neon + a big hill = giant street Tetris!

This looks like way too much fun! Kudos to the group that put it together - that’s a whole lot of EL wire!

Lightsaber chopsticks (not a joke)

“Use the fork, Luke …”  Ok, that was my bad pun for the day.

Geek bedding at its finest… the AT-AT Loft Bed

A Star Wars fan dad with serious dedication and time.  (ok, I am assuming he built this for his kid)

What do Star Wars, Robots, 3D printing, and Open Source hardware all have in common?

They’re all in this one project… The geek singularity may have just happened.

This is a MakerBot, a totally open-source robot that prints 3d objects, so already, pretty awesomely geeky. Then it’s been pimped out with black paint and red LED’s in hacker geek style. Finally, it’s printing a Darth Vader head from black plastic. But wait, there’s more! Instead of stopping there, they also got the MakerBot to play music with it’s motors, running them at different speeds so they can play the Imperial March.

Awesome robots, open source, and some hard-core Star Wars geekery all at once? Those madmen, they’ve crossed the streams!

Digg it!

Pants Status? Keyboarded!

Put your feet on the desk and WORK!  Here’s some truly rigeekulous fashion hacking from those geniuses over at NYC Resistor.

Amplifyd from www.nycresistor.com

I had a blast today at Diana’s fashion hacking event, and I made these nifty pants that sort-of function as a keyboard. I can play tetris at least! It was fun to make them, and if you’d like to make your own you can download the files from Thingiverse. It was nice to spend the day working on a goofy project with no real value with my friends. Oh, and now I have some super-sexy nerd magnet shorts. Awesome.

3-D Printing with Clay!

I love a good materials hacking article!  Frustrated with the high cost of materials for their 3-D printers, UW mechanical engineering students developed a better solution using ceramics and food products.  Check out the awesome results!

3-D Printing Hits Rock-bottom Prices With Homemade Ceramics Mix

About five years ago, Mark Ganter, a UW mechanical engineering professor and longtime practitioner of 3-D printing, became frustrated with the high cost of commercial materials and began experimenting with his own formulas. He and his students gradually developed a home-brew approach, replacing a proprietary mix with artists’ ceramic powder blended with sugar and maltodextrin, a nutritional supplement. The results are printed in a recent issue of Ceramics Monthly. Co-authors are Duane Storti, UW associate professor of mechanical engineering, and Ben Utela, a former UW doctoral student.

Geeks, Music, Twitter…what could be more Rigeekulous?

It was only a matter of time before geeks found a way to send sound through Twitter.  Tweet A Sound lets you create short synth bursts to share with friends over Twitter.  I suspect this is only the beginning for alternative ways to send sounds over short messaging services.  Wouldn’t tweets like this, sent into an iPhone/Android app be perfect for original music driven silent dance parties?

Share synth sounds via Twitter

Tweet A Sound let’s you design and share synth patches by way of the ever-popular Twitter. The software represents your patch via a compact string of numbers. The 140 character limit keeps your tweakable parameter count relatively low, but this could be welcome if you’ve ever found yourself overwhelmed by the deluge of options common to software synths. With a few adjustments to one of the presets, it’s easy to eke out a quick “wow” -

Rigeekulous wedding proposal via Geekologie

We’ve all heard tales of people married in Star Wars Costumes but this dude just bumped things up a notch and proposed via the geek blog his girlfriend introduced him to, Geekologie.

Very funny, and awesome of Geekologie to play along :)

will you marry me.jpg
Ashley, Joseph wants you to marry him. And I trust Joseph’s judgment since you’re the one that introduced him to Geekologie in the first place. Read more at www.geekologie.com

Awesome crocheted Megaman helmet

I can’t say that I’d have the nerve to wear this out in public (although the helmet ear-flaps do look cosy), but this is easily one of the funniest and coolest hats ever!

Apparently a very lucky geeky boy has a super awesome crafty gal who knit him up this awesome hat. Now she just needs to knit him some Mega Man arm warmers and leg warmers and hes all set to battle Dr Willy.
